CASTLE RESTORATION PROJECT
RESTORATION PROJECT UPDATE
Thursday April 17, 2003
Archaeologist: Marcus Casey.
Architect: David Newman Johnson.
Owner: Ken McLeod.
The planning application has been lodged with Galway County Council, March 2003.
It is expected to start work in the summer of 2003.
Brackloon Castle underwent major changes in the 17th century. Wood was used instead of stone for the door-heads and many lintels.
The restoration work will restore some of the earlier features now missing. A temporary roof has been fitted using the original joist holes so that no material change was made to the building. The window openings have been left open to allow the wind to blow through. This will allow the building to begin gently drying out.
